If you are travelling with kids then you should check out the area of Mondello, the beach neighbourhood, 8-10km north of the city centre, easily reachable by public transport (bus #806 in 30 minutes) or taxi (20 minutes). I find it a bit crowded and touristy and might stay down at sea level at Taormina-Naxos, but I wouldn't stay in Catania for sure!
