We have loved it for its reasonable price, ease of setup, wide range of fitment options, and reliable performance. HBO is seen as a priority for rear shocks as the RS shocks are seeing a whole range of different leverage rate curves. If you get a bike with one of the lower level shocks on it, you can also upgrade any MY23 Super Deluxe coil spring to the new RC2T reservoir. If youre not the guy writing down your settings in a book every time you turn a dial, then this will make tuning your shock way less intimidating and allow you to get to that dialed setup with minimal hassle. Theres also an inline Deluxe Coil shock for OEM use, giving more brands the ability to fit a coil spring into more frames, so look for that on aggressive budget bikes.

Likewise, I cannot comment on how the performance of the new damper compares to past versions of the Super Deluxe air and coil shocks I've ridden. I guess a follow up question would be how wide of a range is the user adjustable HBO providing? New York, The updates largely mirror those added to the fork line revised dampers and air springs as well as chassis updates plus some new features and additional adjustability.

The bottom out bumper is castled for smoother compression and theres an optional hydraulic bottom out tapered needle in the shaft damper that ramps up resistance progressively in the last 20 percent of the stroke.

Or I am thinking about this all wrong and the HBO will work just fine regardless of the spring rate in use? He has been writing about the latest bikes, components, and cycling technology for 14 years.

The negative chamber volume has been increased, compared to the older DebonAir C1 spring, and the position of the equalization dimple has been tweaked relative to the piston at topout, so that the equalization happens a few millimeters into the fork stroke, for better balanced positive and negative spring forces at topout. Tasco MTB Apparel - Shirt, Shorts, Gloves and Socks, OneUp's New Dropper Post Remote? Its a shimmed system so its more a matter of if you can increase the HBO stack without it negatively affecting the seamless performance of the damper.

Future US, Inc. Full 7th Floor, 130 West 42nd Street, The Deluxe Ultimate gives you all the tuning options with separate lockout and low-speed compression adjustments, plus a rebound adjustment knob. The two different air cans let you choose (or, more likely, let your bikes manufacturer choose) the best air volume to augment each frames particular kinematics.

You can catch Tor in front of the camera or behind the keyboard, but best of luck catching him on the trail! The topout bumper has also been revised, to provide a smoother, gentler stop.

This shock has been a staple of RockShoxs lineup for a number of years now, and has been one of the most popular shocks for hard-charging mountain bikers ever since it was released. And even if you are that guy with a suspension diary, then this still makes it way to track your settings. It's the little details. The Buttercups can compress by up to 4 mm, and RockShox says that their data acquisition in testing shows that they reduce chatter by 20%, which should help with hand and wrist fatigue on longer, rougher descents. There are five clicks of HSC via a 3mm hex-key, five clicks of LSC via the side-mounted adjustment nob, and 15 clicks of rebound oriented at the top of the shock on the air systems, and at the bottom of the shaft on the coils. This is to keep crap from getting ingested into the shock and also to support the shaft through any loads as it telescopes.

choosing a selection results in a full page refresh. Heres why you can trust us.

And then the whole lineup gets the same new Maxima Plush Dynamic Suspension Lube as the fork lineup, too. As with the MY23 suspension forks, RockShox has introduced a significant amount of specificity to the new shocks along with HBO. A more complete rundown of the lineup is below.

The Super Deluxe air shock seal heads have a pair of sized DU bushings sandwiching an o-ring. Rock Shox has had two bushings separated by a "rubber thing" in the seal head for years, nothing new there. The fact that Fox now has the same design in the Float X is new however. ;).

Photo: RockShox. So hydraulic bottom out, adjustable or fixed, is an awesome feature that most riders will appreciate, but it's also going to frustrate a few folks to no end. My plan for a future follow up piece is to check out what brands are releasing bikes with Super Deluxe shocks without HBO and to follow up on why they made that decision.

I've also seen full suspension rigs with alignment issues so bad that they unwind shocks, break shafts, load bodies against air cans, load shafts against bodies, and generally eat shocks - no matter what brand shock comes spec.

But because you need the back pressure to prevent cavitation, and shocks see much higher pressure than forks (thanks to leverage ratios), you need that tight seal. The Pike is available for both 27.5 and 29 wheels and with 120, 130, or 140 mm travel. Subcribe to our newsletter and always be the first to hear about what is happening.

So, designing a fork is more ~straightforward~? As someone who has had multiple coil shock pistons unthread while riding due to questionable frame alignment/design/QC, that keyed piston is a great idea! The 'T' is RC2T is for threshold and I think it's also important to note that the Super Deluxe shocks include a lock-out plate level of threshold for those that like to hard charge their full suspension bikes up the road out of the saddle. For folks that are feeling a little bit overwhelmed by how many products RockShox has completely overhauled this year, I'm with you. Four-position high speed compression damping adjustment is then done with a 3mm Allen bolt. Its hard to tell where the balance is between the more sophisticated, back pressure quietened damping circuits, smoother bushings and fluid, and better overlap in terms of influencing the feel, but the overall result is delicious. Some of these OEM air shocks will also come with a hydraulic bottom out bumper, while some will not. I've seen some incredible shock wear, within a year of use, on Trunnion bikes and in particular when they have seized Trunnion bearings. On air shocks, the HBO is fixed, but optionalchoose a model with it if you routinely take big hits and landings and want better bottom-out control without having to add a bunch of positive air spacers or firm up your suspension. A separate lockout lever sits opposite of the LSC knob, and a rebound knob gives you 15 clicks of adjustment. We are stoked on all of the improvements RockShox has made on their already amazing performing rear shocks, and cant wait to log more miles on them and give you a more in depth review in the future! I think we can assume a Charger 3 and DebonAir+ Boxxer is on the way. RockShox has given the core of their suspension lineup a major overhaul, and a lot of the updates seem awfully promising on paper.

But, I always feel a tinge of imposter syndrome when I'm writing about the guts of rear shocks. He loves riding and also loves sharing his experiences with others. It does make me wonder if a coil fork with HBO is in the works though So, designing a fork is more ~straightforward~?.

Way Better Than The Old One, Size-Specific Water Bottle & Accessory Mounting Points. Especially being available down to the most basic shocks with just rebound adjustment.

I really like the squared shaft idea, it is great to see preventative action against side-loading fallout come from the shock manufacturer.

Right on top of the shock is a familiar sight, the low-speed rebound, which is executed very similar to the previous version and I was able to find a comfortable setting almost right away. This holds true even solely based on friends of mine who pack their air cans with the maximum number of volume spacers or run significantly less than recommended sag to deal with the routine bottom outs they're experiencing. Think Push ELEVEN SIX or EXT Storia.

Notably absent in the new fork releases are updates to the Boxxer. Both the high and low-speed compression dials have 5 clicks of compression, with the idea being that you have two clicks to increase damping, and two clicks to decrease damping from that base tune. RockShox has also overhauled their rear shock lineup to go with the new forks, with new versions of the Deluxe and Super Deluxe, in both air and coil configurations. While the preferred feel Venn diagrams for most riders will generally match across how much high and low speed compression they like, I deliberately ran opposing setups just to verifying the separation claims. Based in North Carolina, Tyler loves finding new travel adventures to share with his family and is always on the lookout for the next shiny new part to make his bikes faster and lighter.

Just pop in the model of 2023 fork or shock, your bike, and your weight, and itll help you set it up and tune it. If Vorsrpung can do a version of their Smashpot coil conversion that work with the buttercup it could a good solution.

I think its awesome, air or coil. The new Charger 3 damper is available in the Ultimate and Select+ versions of the Pike, Lyrik, and ZEB (more on those below), with adjustable high- and low-speed compression, plus rebound. To make sure he rarely sleeps and to fund his custom tandem habit, hes also penned a handful of bike-related books and talks to a GoPro for YouTube, too. why no HBO in the Charger 3 damper.

This is a big day for RockShox who are launching all new forks (Zeb, Lyrik, and Pike) and Super Deluxe air and coil shocks for the 2023 model year. There are big changes internally too as RockShox introduce the RC2T damper.

The Ultimate-series forks also get a new bushing package, with a 53% longer lower bushing, which RockShox says increases overlap and reduces friction by distributing the load over a greater area and helping to mitigate binding when the fork is being heavily loaded. One minor thing: the rubber ring between the DU bushings is a quad-ring or X-ring, not an O-ring. The 2023 updates cover the Pike, Lyrik, and ZEB forks, all of which are meant for Trail and Enduro use the XC-oriented SID and SID SL, as well as the Boxxer DH fork, are unchanged, for now. Feel free to shoot us an email or give us a call! At any rate, I'm not here to argue about whether your next bike should have a Trunnion mount or not - mine certainly won't - but if you're curious about the subject I don't think anyone has done a better job of covering it than Steve-from-Vorsprung's 'Durability, and how to prevent it'. It also gets the same new bolt-on fender as the Pike, and the classic red color option on the Lyrik Ultimate has been replaced with a new olive green color that RockShox calls Heavy Meadow. The Lyrik is available for both 27.5 and 29 wheels and with 140, 150, or 160 mm of travel. The idea was to simplify tuning, by having a consistent and repeatable baseline thats actually a middle-of-the-road, viable setting for a lot of riders (instead of fully closed compression damping, which few folks would actually run in practice). Support us! The biggest new change is a Hydraulic Bottom Out (HBO), with both fixed and adjustable options.

Very nice write-up and we'll documented! Based on my experiences with other brands, this will net out to be less expensive than selling your basic Super Deluxe and purchasing a new Ultimate-level shock, especially if your shock is due for a service anyway, meaning the labour is already accounted for. Just as an FYI, the downside to this is that you need really tight seals to keep that gas from escaping, and those tight seals create friction, so the piston cant move as freely or react as quickly. Prior to that, Tyler launched and built multiple sports nutrition brands and consumer goods companies, mostly as an excuse to travel to killer riding locations throughout North America.

This shock will be offered in all metric sizes with an MSRP of $599 for the air version and $529 for the coil version. He spent a few years working in bike shops and warehouses before starting writing and testing for bike mags in 1996.

Getting your new shock tuned specifically for your bike is recommended for most performance shocks and this isn't specific to RockShox, but it's easily done at your local service center. RockShox has also made the process of reshimming a bit easier with this damper, allowing shops like us that do in depth suspension work to have an easier time sourcing shim stacks and retuning shocks. RockShox has come out with a brand new iteration of both the Super Deluxe Ultimate Air and Coil, so lets take a look at what changes have been made.

Dial in more HBO damping for more bottom-out resistance as needed.

The system can accept 0-4 volume spacers in the positive chamber and 0-1 volume spacers in the negative. RockShox calls that phenomenon cross talk, and says that theyve reduced it to the point where the amount of damping at 300 inches per second of shaft speed (squarely in the high-speed range) only varies by 5% across the entire range of the low-speed compression adjuster.

Its a full redesign from the outgoing Charger 2.1, including a switch to a coil-spring-backed IFP design (from a bladder on the Charger 2.1). That would have been a great question re. Apart from what I've already covered the most important thing to note with the Super Deluxe air shocks is that they use entirely new volume spacers which are not backwards compatible. On the note of volume spacers, the new shocks can take 0-4 spacers in the positive chamber and 0-1 spacers in the negative chamber. It happens even on the stiffest of suspension linkages (@Banshee+Cane Creek pre-seal head revision). The Pike Trail bike fork gets an all-new chassis, and while the 35 mm stanchions remain, RockShox says that the new version is both slightly stiffer and a few grams lighter than the outgoing version.

Other fork trims get the standard bushing package, and upgrading to the Ultimate bushings requires an entire UItimate lower leg casting with the bushings pre-installed. Photo: Andrew Major, For the new MY23 air shocks equipped with HBO, the hydraulic bottom out is preset and affects the last 25% of the stoke. The new approach to low speed compression might not suit everyone though.

Theres a lot to cover here, so lets dive straight in. Super Deluxe Coil, These two adjustments function completely independently from each other, allowing for very tangible differences between each click. From some setups I've ridden, I'd even go as far as to say some riders would be better serviced by not upgrading their Select+ dampers with the Ultimate control unit. Hydraulic Bottom Out The Super Deluxe Ultimate Air has a new DebonAir+ air can, which comes in two options: progressive or linear. This significant increase in bushing overlap should improve support and decrease friction. Hydraulic Bottom Out (HBO) is a fixed feature on the RockShox's Super Deluxe air shocks and has 5 clicks of adjustment on the coil Super Deluxe shocks.

In addition to all the new features that we talked about up top, the new Pike also gets a new bolt-on fender (similar to the one thats been available on the ZEB for a few years now). Adding or removing the HBO system would require a full damper overhaul and swapping a number of parts, so its not going to be an easy DIY, or probably all that cost-effective rather, some OE-spec shocks may skip the option if the frame manufacturer decides that its not suitable for the frame in question but its essentially baked into the shock (or not) from the factory. I think this is a big deal, such a big deal that in most cases I'd much rather have a bike equipped with the most basic Select level shock with HBO installed than a more tuneable shock without it.
