The exact print source is unknown. Taylors original translation continued to be used for a large number of subsequent editions, right into the twentieth century, though almost always without any indication of his name. The anonymous translator adds only one new tale to those already published in English by Edgar Taylor in 1823-26, but he or she gives almost all the tales a different title. He was a printer, but also translated eight other books during the period 1840-55. The translation of titles is a general problem with the transmission of the Grimms tales, as subsequent translators have often rendered them very differently. The light-hearted spirit of the German tale has been turned into a moral lesson in the English poem. (Some of the translations But it was now the turn of Germany, which was currently enjoying a vogue of novels, stories and plays in English translation, to inject a new range of material into the realm of the fairytale. 10This first of the translators of the Grimms into English is very concerned about the impact of the stories on his readers. We laugh at Hanss naivety and may feel some sadness at the way in which he so thoughtlessly loses what he had worked seven years to earn, but are we not also invited to see a simple heart, free of the burden of possessions, as worthy of respect? The knowledge that they weren't originally intended as children's tales.
