And this is the plastic mold. You want it to be goopy, not too liquid, but if its too hard, too thick, it wont spread out nicely and youll have more bubbles problems. Cause thats really like two separate layers. So I do it by eye, but if youre not familiar with plaster, just do it according to the manufacturer instructions. Well see where I cut it off. So can, you know, manipulate nature a little bit so that it goes in the direction that you want it to. So you can still, you know, control a little bit the details by what you leave and what you remove. So note on safety, when you work with powdered plaster or powdered pigments, its a good idea to wear a dust mask. In the meantime, Ill pour a little bit of different color plaster for the strawberry. You cant overlap thick leaves like this too well because they dont leave a nice imprint underneath. So you can first mix your plaster and then when its nice and even, you sprinkle a bit of your pigment on top and you dont mix it super well, thats gonna give you marble-y swirls, which could be nice. I bought a few supplies and had a few things on hand to complete the botanical casting art. So you have to sort of help it and think about the way the imprint is gonna look like after the rolling pin has gone on top of it. You can paint them in any color or even use color on the plants to make them stand out against a background. This gives it double the prevention from drying out. So Ill show you how to do that. And you want to think how its gonna fit in the shape of the mold like how, it will be arranged and you can cheat a little bit.

I have a little bit more space to get into the cracks here, at the same time Im hoping the plaster will follow the space available and I dont ever try to get it perfect. And so the idea after youve poured your clay, is to shake the mold. So if its a look preference, thats fine, but just be really careful when handling them, especially theyre still wet, just fresh plaster, because its gonna be much easier to break. Very important, when you work with plaster, you never ever rinse it down your drain. Otherwise youll have to really drill it out with a drill bit, which is also possible. You can buy any type or any size frame to your preference. So you want to sprinkle your plaster evenly on the surface and thats where you wear mask because it gets everywhere in the air and into your lungs. So Ill use the narcissus and Ill place it sort of in a way that makes sense with the boundaries of my circle that I planned and then were gonna flatten it. Now place your dried flowers on the clay and arrange them till you are pleased with your design. The great part about this material is that it does set no matter how you make it. Interesting geometric shapes, but the color doesnt really matter. And this one is quite shallow. I also like to take out any excess of air from the airtight sealed plastic bags to ensure it is in as little air contact as possible. We are using cookies to give you the best experience on our site. Now we make the mixture. Lets see if I can do it, with an alternative roller tool, my knife. You can use a tweezer or plucker to remove remaining dried flowers from hard to reach parts. So here Im actually measuring it for you. It is important to push the frame into the imprint. Ill use this one also to push it nice and deep into the clay. So if I pour my plaster in here, Im only gonna get one color result. So Ill just push this more down because I started removing it, make sure its nice and deep. I used white acrylic paint for a classic look. I intended to not let the clay air dry and become useless for more attempts. And then they stick to each other. If you make too much, again, dont dump the extra into your drain, dump it into something like a newspaper or a bucket that youll let sink down before you dump it. Ill remove this one. If you use a metal mold like this, it might be a good idea to use some kind of release agent like Vaseline or something greasy on the inside to make sure your plaster is not gonna stick.

So here I can still, you know, play a little bit with the placement. So think of what kind of surface you want to use underneath. This one can go here. The last bit of rolling, of course, you want to make sure your rolling pin is nice and clean.

Its funny the clay on the edge of the olives themselves is a different color. We can wait for the plastic to cure completely and then rinse that off. Find cheap liners at dollar store to use for rolling clay. Then allowed it to set overnight! Again, you want work on wet plaster, so underwater in a sink or something to catch all the dust, and then you can refine the texture of the back, send it flat on the sandpaper like this and then the edges a little bit to make them a neater, but give it really nice detail. I have my flower now, whats the next step? This step ensures the water and plaster of Paris mixture doesnt overflow or leak when you pour it. When the plaster is wet, it will look darker than when its dry. The trick is to remove the plaster of paris mold from the clay once it sets and let it air dry over night on a piece of tissue paper. So you can also just leave them without the white or make your life easy and choose something a little bit sturdier with thicker leaves. So here again, Im gonna fill in just the lower details and its really hard to see all the edges and boundaries for this petal. So with my paintbrush, Ill just dilute and mix it really well. Thats fine cause thats gonna clean up real easy. So be a bit more generous than you think and then Ill add my plaster. Sometimes I find it a bit distracting from the beautiful details of the flowers themselves, a bit of a competition.

So as soon as the plaster is hard enough, you can peel off the clay and reuse it. So this is one example of the things we can make today. So that looks pretty good. So Ill grab one of those. So thats kind of the first one and then you want to sprinkle it into your water. Use playdoh molds, handheld tools to freehand draw or even dry food items to make cool art for your home. So again, dont pour this down your drain. All right, that seems pretty good. You can call it dried floral art or botanical art whichever you prefer better! And so if youre taking your time and you see that the plaster is getting really too thick and not flowing anymore, thats fine. So in this case I try to roll it nice and smooth as flat as I can. Use a blade or knife to mark the borders of the frame to know your working space with flower print design. 13. But I think the backside in this case is gonna be more interesting. I can do it with a wet sandpaper. I have s, Acrylic paints in your color choice (I used white acrylic paint). Im doing it, especially on this side where the stem was sticking out of my mold. So I also wont bother to try. Ill put it back.

It doesnt really matter what type, because we wont be actually baking it.

So the plants, get the showcase. You want to let the water absorb into all of your powder. If you dont intend to reuse the clay it is ok to let it dry overnight in the clay only.

So thats if I want to make a flower thats or a plaster relief thats all one color.

Im gonna swirl a little bit of water in it and sort of clean down the edges of the mold or the plastic and let that water settle.

So again, all the pieces of clay was plaster in it. So here again, I peel off the layer and you can see the details and theres a tiny bit of clay left around the edge. And then with your finger just go on the edge Dig in a little bit.

From the moment that it starts to cool down I normally release it. Plaster always sticks to plaster. So Ill first spread it out by hand, decide where all my leaves are gonna go and then Ill go over it with a rolling pin.
